Domain Authority
Domain Authority is a third-party score (developed by Moz) that estimates how well a domain is likely to rank in search, based on backlink profile and other signals — a relative benchmark, not a Google ranking factor.
Also known as: DA score, domain rating, site authority score
Domain Authority (DA) is a third-party score, developed by Moz, that predicts how well a domain is likely to rank in search results. It is calculated from a domain’s backlink profile and a set of related signals, expressed on a 1-to-100 scale where higher is stronger. Similar competing scores exist — Ahrefs’ Domain Rating, Semrush’s Authority Score — each using its own methodology.
What Domain Authority Means
Domain Authority is a logarithmic score from 1 to 100 that Moz calculates from a domain’s backlink profile, link diversity, and a machine-learning model trained against observed search results. It is not a Google ranking factor — Google does not expose its own internal authority calculations and does not use Moz’s DA. A B2B niche site with DA 35 to 50 can outrank larger competitors on relevant topics; major publishers and enterprise brands typically sit 70+. The useful benchmark is DA relative to direct competitors and link-building targets, not an absolute number to chase in isolation.
How Domain Authority Works
Domain Authority works as a relative benchmark, useful for comparing a domain against competitors, evaluating link-building targets, and tracking the strength of a site’s backlink profile over time. Because the scale is logarithmic, moving from 30 to 40 is much easier than moving from 70 to 80. Improvements in DA come from earning quality backlinks from relevant authoritative sites — through digital PR, original research, useful tools, and content other sites genuinely want to cite. DA is a lagging indicator: improvements in the link profile usually show up in DA scores weeks to months later, after Moz recrawls and recomputes.
Common Pitfalls and Misconceptions
The common mistake is treating Domain Authority as an absolute measure of SEO success or a target to optimize directly. Chasing DA points often leads to low-quality link building that inflates the score without improving actual rankings. The score reflects backlink strength, but rankings depend on relevance, content quality, technical fundamentals, and many other factors DA doesn’t measure. Another misconception is over-reacting to DA fluctuations — DA shifts as Moz updates its index and recalibrates its model, so a drop of a few points may have nothing to do with the site. Worry when DA drops alongside falling backlink counts and visible ranking losses.
Domain Authority in Practice
The practitioner-level framing is that Domain Authority is a useful comparison tool and a poor goal. Treat it the way you’d treat a credit score for a domain — a rough signal of standing in a portfolio of comparable sites, worth glancing at quarterly but not worth steering quarterly plans against. The questions that matter — is the right content earning rankings, is the link profile diversified, is the brand becoming a cited authority in its category — are answered by other instruments. AI answer engines correlate DA with citation likelihood loosely, but citation share is more granular: a focused page on a mid-DA domain can outperform a generic page on a high-DA one.
